How to Care for a Lithophane So It Lasts for Years

Alex

The good news first

A lithophane has no glass, so it will not fade or corrode. The PLA material stays stable for years at normal room temperature. That means care is really minimal, but there are a few things you should do right.

Cleaning step by step

1. Regularly (once a month) A soft, dry cloth. Just wipe off the dust, the same way you would with a picture.

2. For heavier dirt A cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water. No detergent, no alcohol, no harsh cleaners. After wiping, dry it with a second dry cloth.

3. Details in the grooves A soft brush (for example, a new toothbrush) gently reaches even pronounced relief details. Apply no pressure.

What to avoid

  • Alcohol and thinners: can damage the surface
  • Acetone: damages PLA instantly
  • Hot water above 50 °C: the material is heat sensitive
  • Rough cloths and sponges: can scratch the surface
  • Dishwasher: never

Where to place your lithophane

Do: - Keep it indoors, at room temperature - Keep it out of direct sunlight (UV gradually changes the color of PLA) - Place it somewhere stable where it cannot fall - Keep it near a light source that will illuminate it

Do not: - Place it on a sunny windowsill - Place it above a radiator or near a stove - Put it in a bathroom with high humidity - Leave it in a car in summer

Replacing the LED light

The LED strip or spotlight that lights up your lithophane usually lasts 5-10 years. When it goes out:

  1. Disconnect the power source
  2. Remove the LED from the stand (in most cases it is simply slotted in)
  3. Replace it with the same type, commonly available at any electronics store
  4. Optimal color: warm white 2700-3000 K for a natural effect

What to do if something happens

  • Minor scratches: usually invisible once lit from behind
  • Major damage: contact us, we will make a replacement from the saved file
  • Color loss from sunlight: move it into the shade, it will not progress any further
