A Gift for the Dad Who Has Everything: A 3D Picture from His Photo
AlexShare
The problem every birthday and Christmas gift-giver faces
Dad has everything. Tools, a watch, clothes. When he needs something, he buys it himself. Right away, without waiting. When you show up with a classic gift, he smiles, says thanks, and puts it on a shelf.
This is the story of most families. The solution isn't finding a better thing, it's giving up on finding a thing and starting to look for a memory instead.
What a 3D picture is, and why dad won't get it anywhere else
A 3D picture, or lithophane, is a photograph we've reprinted into a material. The result looks like a relief. In normal light it's a subtle raised image, but when you light it from behind, the photo pops with a depth and contrast a classic frame simply can't give.
We make every picture to order from a specific photo. There's no catalog to pick from. It can't be bought in a store. And since it carries his photo, or a photo from your shared past, no one else can give him one. This is exactly the kind of gift a man never buys for himself, but looks at for a long time.
Which photo works best
These motifs work well for dad:
- Family photo: a trip, Christmas, a vacation, a celebratory moment.
- Portrait: of himself alone or with the kids, ideally with good contrast between the face and the background.
- A hobby: if he fishes, hikes in the mountains, or gardens, a shot from his world works just as well as a portrait.
- A historical photo: a family archive, a childhood photo, an old black-and-white shot.
You don't need a professional shot. A sharp phone photo with good light is enough. If you're not sure, send it to us and we'll tell you whether it works before you order. For free.
What size picture to choose
For a desk or a shelf, a smaller format is enough, 10x15 cm or 15x20 cm. For a wall in the living room or hallway, we recommend 20x30 cm or larger. A wall lithophane usually gets its own light fixture behind it to illuminate it. That's the effect that stops every guest in their tracks.
If you're giving it for a birthday and want to hang the picture, add a small light base or lamp to the gift. Customers who do this say it's the moment when dad stops playing it cool and says out loud that he likes it.
Timing: when to order
Making each 3D picture takes several days. Don't count on an express order the day before the birthday. It's best to order at least a week in advance. That gives us time to process, check, and pack the picture so it arrives in good condition.
If you've realized the celebration is in five days, write to us. Sometimes we can make it work, but we won't promise anything in advance.
What if dad isn't the decoration type
Not every dad likes things on the wall. If yours prefers function, consider a designer 3D lamp instead. KUMO or Lumira are lamps that actually get used, not just displayed. They look unusual, they light up well, and he's guaranteed not to already have one like it at home.
If you're after something with a personal touch, a 3D picture is the best choice. If you want a gift that's also practical, a lamp is a strong candidate.
You can check out both in our online store or contact us through the form if you need advice before deciding.
TLDR
- A 3D picture from a photo = a gift dad won't buy himself and can't get anywhere else.
- A phone photo is enough, as long as it's sharp and well lit.
- 10x15 cm for a desk, 20x30 cm or larger for a wall.
- Order at least a week in advance, it's made to order.
- For a practical dad, try a designer lamp instead of a picture (KUMO, Lumira).
