KUMO Configurator: Now on Mobile Too, Better on PC
AlexShare
For a long time, the KUMO configurator could only be opened on a computer. As of today, it also works on mobile. You open the page, pick colors, material and dimensions, and order exactly the way you would on a laptop. A small thing for someone who spends their days on a phone. A bigger thing than it looks.
We made the change after hundreds of emails along the lines of “I'm on vacation, can I design it from my phone?”. The answer is yes. The one thing we should say plainly: for a better sense of the final lamp, a computer is still a notch closer to reality.
What mobile handles without a problem
The basic workflow runs smoothly on mobile. Choosing the color of the top part, the bottom part, the bulb and the size. A tap rotates the 3D model, a pinch zooms into detail, a swipe moves through configurations. On a phone from the last three or four years, the configurator opens in under a second and does not stutter.
If you know what you want, or you saw a KUMO at a friend's place and are just fine-tuning the shade, mobile is completely enough. The order goes through, the photos display, and all parameters carry over to the cart the same as on a PC.
Why a PC gives you a better sense of it
The difference is not that mobile renders a simplified model. The model is the same one. The difference is in screen size. On a 6-inch display, you see the lamp at roughly the size of a postage stamp. The detail of the joints between parts, the matte finish, the way light reflects off Terracotta versus Cloud White, all of that exists on mobile, but you have to imagine it.
On a 15 or 24 inch monitor, the same thing is ten times bigger. Suddenly you see that a shade that looked browner on mobile actually has an orange depth to it. Or that a combination that felt understated on the phone is quite bold on the wall. These details decide whether the lamp still suits you after three weeks, or ends up in a corner.
We see this in our own data. Customers who configured on a PC change the color after delivery in roughly one out of twenty units. Customers who clicked impulsively on mobile give feedback like “I didn't realize that shade would look like this in the end”. That is why we recommend mobile for a quick first look, and a PC for the final click.
When mobile is a fine choice too
Three situations where mobile is completely sufficient.
- You are ordering a neutral combination (Cloud White, Cocoa Brown, matte finish). These shades barely shift with the light in a room.
- You have seen the lamp in person at someone else's place. Your eye already knows the real thing, the screen is just a reminder.
- You are buying it as a gift and will not live with it. An approximate sense of the recipient's taste is enough here.
In every other case, we recommend clicking through at least the final comparison on a bigger screen. The link in the email we send you after configuration works on any device. You can start on mobile on the tram and finish in the evening on your laptop.

TLDR
- The KUMO configurator now also works on mobile, and the order goes through the same as on a PC.
- Mobile is enough for neutral shades or when you have already seen the lamp in person.
- PC shows colors and details more realistically, better for bolder combinations.
- We recommend starting on mobile, and clicking through the final comparison on a bigger screen.
- Color change after delivery: about 1 in 20 for PC customers, higher for impulsive mobile orders.
