Black-and-White or Color Lithophane? How to Choose the Right One

What's actually the difference
A black-and-white lithophane works only with differences in material thickness. Where the plastic is thinner, more light passes through and a lighter tone appears. Where it's thicker, the image darkens. The result is subtle and timeless, a bit like an old porcelain engraving.
A color lithophane adds tones on top of that same depth. The plastic itself isn't clear, the colors are built directly into the material during printing. The result resembles stained glass: when a lamp shines behind it, the photo comes to life.
When to choose black and white
A black-and-white lithophane works best when the photo has strong composition and contrast. Portraits, architectural shots, black-and-white photos from a family album. That's where it belongs.
In a brighter room, black and white looks more elegant. It also suits situations where you don't want to disrupt the room's color scheme but still want something personal on the wall.
There's a practical advantage too. Black-and-white lithophanes are more forgiving of "imperfect" photos. If the original shot is a bit dark or grainy, black and white handles it more gently than color.
When to choose color
A color lithophane wants a photo with saturated colors. Floral motifs, a garden shot, a portrait of a child in colorful clothes, a wedding photo. Here the color version beats black and white by a wide margin.
A glowing color lithophane instantly becomes the center of attention in a room. It works best as the main wall decoration, not as an accent among other pictures.
One thing you should know. The result depends on the quality of the color photo and on how it was edited before printing. At Printhia, every color image goes through manual review before printing starts, to make sure the colors are right.
What if you're not sure
The simplest answer: send us the photo and ask. We'll assess which version will work better for your picture. If it's a close call, we'll tell you straight.
Some photos are really borderline. For example, a snow scene with a child's bright red jacket. There the color version can win even though the scene is mostly white.
Practical comparison
Black and white is the better choice when:
- the photo has strong contrast and good composition
- the room is decorated in neutral tones
- you want an elegant, understated gift
- the original photo is already black and white
Color is the better choice when:
- the photo has bold, saturated colors
- you want a decoration that grabs attention right away
- you're giving something to a child or a children's room
- the shot is from nature, a garden, or a festive moment
What both versions have in common
We make both variants at Printhia to order. No stock pieces, every picture is printed for a specific photo. Both use materials certified for home use, and both last for decades without fading or warping.

TLDR
- Black and white = material thickness, subtle, forgiving of weaker photos.
- Color = colors built into the material, glows like stained glass under a lamp.
- Choose black and white for portraits and high-contrast photos.
- Choose color for motifs with saturated tones (flowers, children, holidays).
- If unsure, send us the photo, we'll assess it for free.
