Black and White vs Color Lithophane: Which One and When

Alex

A color lithophane looks more striking in an online store photo. Black and white holds up better in a real room. That's not always true, but it is in most cases.

When to choose black and white

Portraits. Old family photos. Any memories from a time before photography had filters. A black and white lithophane highlights the face, and background details don't get in the way. In low light, it even looks like a scanned hand drawing.

When to choose color

Landscapes with a striking sky. Photos of a dog or cat where the fur is the main feature. Company logos. Wedding portraits with a green meadow. Anywhere color carries half the emotion.

One test

Open the photo in an editor and switch it to black and white. If it still hits you, choose a black and white lithophane, it's cheaper, more durable, and never goes out of style. If the photo loses its charm in black and white, go with color.
