How Long Does a 3D Printed Picture and Lithophane Last

Shopify API

Both the 3D picture and the lithophane are printed from PLA plastic. The question of how long they last has a simple answer: in a normal interior, easily for years. What matters more is knowing what damages them, because that's easy to avoid.

Indoors it's not a problem

PLA is stable under room conditions. At normal room temperature, away from direct sunlight, the picture keeps its shape and colors long term. It won't fade within a few months, and it won't warp on its own. It hangs on the wall and does its job.

What really damages it

The two enemies are direct sunlight and heat. UV radiation from the sun can change the plastic's shade over time, and heat above roughly 55 °C softens PLA. Combined together, for example a picture hung on a windowsill behind glass in summer, that's the worst possible spot.

So don't put a 3D picture directly in a south facing window or above a radiator running at full blast. Just moving it a bit further away, onto a wall out of direct sunlight, and the problem disappears.

Lithophane and light

A lithophane lives off the light behind the panel. If you backlight it with an LED source that doesn't generate heat, it can stay lit every evening without harming the panel. When choosing a light for under a lithophane, the same rule applies as with lamps: LED yes, hot bulbs no.

How to keep it looking good

Wipe off dust with a soft dry or slightly dampened cloth. No aggressive cleaning agents or rough sponges that could scratch the surface. For the fine grooves of the relief, a soft brush or compressed air also works well.

When moving house, don't leave the picture in a car heated up in the sun; the temperature there easily exceeds the threshold at which PLA softens.

TLDR

  • A 3D picture and lithophane made of PLA last for years indoors.
  • The biggest threats are direct sunlight and heat, especially the combination of both behind glass in summer.
  • Don't hang them in a south facing window or above a hot radiator.
  • Backlight a lithophane with an LED source that doesn't heat up.
  • Clean with a soft cloth, no rough sponges or aggressive chemicals.
